Car Information:
Saturn Vue XR
Year: 2008
Engine Size: 3.6L
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
My son (35 yrs old) and I are having a dispute over whether it is okay to shift my automatic transmission Vue into neutral at a stop light. I contend it uses less fuel, conserves brakes and torque converter wear. My son contends that it is harder on the transmission and shifter gear. Who is right?

Answer:
You’re both right! Shifting into neutral will require less braking coming to a stop and would burn a little less gas because of less load. Of course, the more you shift the shifter the more wear it will encounter over time but it should be minimal and shouldn’t really hurt anything internally. We’re all still friends, right?
