Issue / Question:
First of all let me say we are loyal listeners to your show on the am radio and have had our vehicles in your shop a few times before and received top notch service. I have a few questions on my 2000 F-350, it has the 7.3 powerstroke engine. My truck has approximately 195k miles on it. I am getting a hair over 14 miles to the gallon on the highway. The truck is 4WD. Its has the 4:10 gear in it which I’m sure doesn’t help my problem but I was told that having so many miles on it that replacing the injectors could help my fuel mileage. Is this true and if so who would you recommend for a set of injectors? Also if I do end up replacing the injectors I assume that higher performance injectors will not help the mpg, is this assumption correct? If so could you give me a little insight as to how much of a difference in mpg I’m looking at if i go with an upgraded injector as compared to a stock replacement.

Answer:
New injectors may help with your fuel economy temporally, see what happens is with the ULSD diesel the injectors get very little lube causing them to short stroke and wont atomize fuel properly when dispersed. Try adding about 16 ounces of Amsoil 100 to 1 two stroke outboard oil to a full tank of fuel and see what happens, this usually provides enough lubrication to get the injectors back to a full stroke and increase torque tremendously. If you have to replace the injectors we can put a price together but unless you got a dead injector this usually works wonders (no kidding).
