Stalling

Car Information:
Toyota Camry
Year: 1996
Engine Size: 2.2 4 cylinder
Trans: Automatic

Issue/Question:
The car was hesitating and it stalled a few times. It set two engine codes: PO401 and P1300. The mechanic replaced the VSV solenoid and the ignitor. The car ran great for a month or so. Then it stalled when I was driving. We thought we ran out of gas. Put in gas and went to store (10 min drive). Then it would start, sounded great, ran 30 seconds, then died. Did this about three times, then it would not even start, had it towed home. Over the next few days it would start and quit or start and run for as much as five minutes, sounding strong and good then it would die. Mechanic thinks it’s the computer. Does that sound reasonable? If we install another computer, does Toyota have to be the one to program the computer?

I have some concern about the cost of such a repair because of the vehicle age. Any magic advice for me? The car is into its second week at the shop, with an uncertain diagnosis.

Answer:
This shouldn’t be this hard, bottom line is does it lose fuel pressure, spark at the ignition coil, or injector pulse when it stalls? If the mechanic can duplicate the stalling and cannot tell you what you need he is the wrong guy to be working on it!

Torque Converter

Car Information:
Ford
Year: 2004
Engine Size: 5.2
Trans: Automatic

Issue/Question: I have the torque converter shutter and brought it by your shop and we put the super oil in it. It seemed to lesson the shutter especially at the 40MPH range but it still shutters. If I accelerate through or back off the gas it stops. My question is what other dammage is occurring due to this problem? I have your estimate of about $900 so if I can’t do this for a few weeks, am I causing futher damge to other parts??

Answer:
Not if we already added it, sounds like your going to be getting a torque converter sooner then later! It shouldn’t hurt anything unless it loses the friction material on the torque converter clutch, if it does it will try to neutral out then drop back into 4th then the OD light will start flashing. Do you have the problem when you cancel the overdrive? Stop by and we will install a bottle of lube guard with a friction enhancer in it and see if that helps.

Safety Mode

Car Information:
Lincoln LS
Year: 2003
Engine Size: V6
Transmission: Automatic

Issue/Question:
Nort suggested I contact you regarding a problem with my Lincoln LS v6. For many months it has had what I suspect is a COP problem. When you had the need to press the accelerator to the floor rapidly, the car would go into Safety Mode. Okay, I could live with that for awhile. When this would happen, the wrench icon would appear on the dash display, and the car would go into idle only. I would have to pull over, stop and restart. Then all would be fine. Then it began to misfire, or not fire perhaps, randomly and not very often, but it would do this in any conditions of driving. Several weeks ago, it just decided to go into Safety Mode during regular driving, and did so 3 times between Edgewater High School and Lee Road/Wymore. The last time it did this the Check Engine icon came on and stayed on. I parked the car and have not driven it since. My Mother had passed away suddenly the day this happened, and with all the other things I have had to deal with since, the car has not been high on my list. I have another car to drive, so the Lincoln just sits for now. It has also developed an oil pan leak that unfortunately seems to be a real hassle to fix on this car. So, my question is, if I drive the car to you, could you look it over and tell me what you believe the problem to be? If yes, how much will that cost me to interrogate the computer and look it over? Should I make an appointment to do this? Thanks.

Answer:
Bruce we will be glad to check it and let you know what it needs. We wont charge you anything to estimate the oil leak but the system scan is a little different because we will need to scan the system while reading the vehicles data and may need to test suspected items with a lab scope to make sure. We also do a TSB and recall search to see if the manufactured has multiple issues with your current problem. After the diagnostic work is performed you will be given an estimate to repair the issue and if you choose to have us do the repair we try to include the diagnostic time in the repair, if you decide to take the vehicle and try to perform the repairs yourself we will charge an hours labor for our time $84.50

Let us know if we can help, 407-629-2661 and very sorry to here about your mother.

Ford Escort GL Computer Problems

Car Information:
Ford Escort GL
Year: 1988
Engine Size: 1.9L
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
What can cause a car to run smooth one day & the next two weeks run erratic & stall through the whole driving range & at Idle, then run another day as if nothing was ever wrong & the following two weeks be crap? Put scanner on it & in the KOEO test 1: active memory, this gives system pass (code 11) then stored memory spits out 2 trouble codes (33 & 34), so I turned the key off & ended scanner and scanner test. I re-did test. 20 seconds later, test 2: active memory, system pass/stored memory: it spits out 6 totally different trouble codes from eca unable to store live memory. The EGR is not open, EGR is closed, EGR sensors voltage too high & too low, to temp sensor voltage out of range. In the 3rd test after 20 seconds, it gives a system pass in active & stored memory I had an extra eca & hooked it up but the car still does the same thing. So I’m lost. Please help.

Answer:
If carbon holds an EGR open, it can cause a very intermittent rough idle problem. EGR or computer is all that’s coming to mind.

Sienna SRS dash light blinking

Car Information:
Toyota Sienna
Year: 2006
Engine Size: 6 cylinder
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
SRS dash light is blinking. Does this mean the srs system has malfunctioned?

Is this a dealer type issue or can your shop diagnose and repair?

Answer:
We use the Launch system for computer diagnostics on late model Toyota’s it give us the ability to scan your computer system, read historic and live data, and we can also reprogram your computer if necessary. the Launch system is considered a vehicle specific scan system for Toyota.

After we diagnose the system failure we will give you a call and give you an estimate for the safety restraint system repair, it could be anything from a multi function switch to a occupant seat sensor.

Acura Integra stalling

Car Information:
Acura Integra
Year: 1991
Engine Size:
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
While driving the car the radio stopped working and the AC fan was blowing very slow even on high. Then the car was very sluggish, I had to stomp on the gas to accelerate at a light.
I stopped the car and it would not restart. It turned over but died almost immediately. After waiting about 30 minutes I was able to restart and everything worked normal. But after about a mile of driving the same symptoms came back except I was able to restart after shutting the car off.
After waiting another 30 minutes it started fine and every thing worked. I have not driven it since. Any ideas what could cause it?

Answer:
Its a long shot but clean the battery terminals first, if you still have the problem you may have a bad ignition switch.

Key not reading properly

Car Information:
GMC Envoy
Year: 2003
Engine Size: V8
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Vehicle equipped with some type of factory security system. After the vehicle sits for approx 6 hours it will not crank. Put the key in, turn the ignition and nothing; just as if it did not have a battery in it. This can go on for maybe ten minutes. After turning on the lights, flipping the door locks back and forth, moving the window up and down something will eventually “connect” and the engine will start and run great. Once it cranks it will continue to crank until it sets for several hours. I also found that if I placed a 200 amp charger on it will crank. Help-wife about to strangle me. Been to the dealer once and they made it worse

Answer:
If you have another key try that. If it doesn’t help its the key reader most likely in the key tumbler, until you get it in put the key in the key switch turn to the on position and let set for 10 minutes this should put the anti theft system into default mode so it will start. If your robbing any banks don’t shut the truck off!

Disable Ignition

Car Information:
Toyota F J Cruiser
Year: 2007
Engine Size: V6
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
I am leaving my 2007 FJ Cruiser at a motel near the Orlando Airport for 4 – 5 days while I fly to San Francisco. Is there a way to disable the ignition to deter theft of the vehicle while I am gone.

I used to take the rotor from vehicles in the past, but I can’t even see a distributor, if it even has one?

Answer:
You mean like unplug the injector harness! Or pull a couple relays out of the relay center under the hood. If I was a FJ cruiser thief and I went to steal it, that would really make me mad!
