Starter

Car Information:
Mercury Grand Marquis
Year: 1987
Engine Size: V8
Trans: Automatic

Issue/Question: We had my Mom’s car fixed at Magic Mechanic on 7/21/2010. The starter and Starter Solenoid were replaced. However, there was a further problem because on Aug. 17th, her battery caught fire when the starter malfunctioned. The car was towed and repaired by the Haines Creek Garage in Leesburg. To make a long story shorter, I have the starter and solenoid that was installed by Magic Mechanic and would like to find out how to apply for a refund for the parts. Any assistance you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:
A starter will and can do a lot of different things but blowing up batteries usually isn’t one of them! In most cases a battery will emit flammable hydrogen acid fumes and if theirs a spark from a connection or an ignition component the fumes and the battery can explode but we have never seen a starter cause this condition. Everything we do at Magic Mechanic has a 1 year 12,000 mile nationwide warranty (we can offer warranty service any where in the United States at any of over 65,000 Napa Car Care Centers and theirs 2 in Leesburg! Under the terms of our warranty it is customary to contact us if its suspected a covered part is at fault. (we answer the phone Monday – Saturday 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM and our answering service forwards all emergency phone calls after hours and on Sunday (I don’t have record of any calls concerning this). We should have been notified and our warranty would pay for towing, loaner vehicle, parts and labor and even pay for lodging if you were out of town! Since the vehicle has already been repaired we will have a few hoops to jump through, I will need for you to drop off the parts and we will need to test them to see if one of the parts has failed and could cause this problem if it can be duplicated we will be able to get you a refund for the entire bill including the new battery if we can deem the parts in question were at fault!

I will also give JD my general manager a copy of this e-mail so he knows what is going on and expect the parts, after you drop off the parts give us a day to do what testing is necessary and contact Napa
on how they want us to proceed with any refunds.

Please give us a call at 407-629-2661 if you have any questions and were sorry your mother encountered a problem.

2001 Infiniti starts with 2nd crank

Car Information:
2001 Infiniti QX4
Year: 2001
Engine Size: 6 cyl.
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Lately over the past month, I am having an intermittent problem where I will turn the key to crank my SUV and nothing happens. The dash lights work, there is no engine code, etc, but the truck does not turn over and no noise. Switch back off and try it again, and it cranks fine. The battery is one year old and working as it should..it was checked out a month ago when this started. Any suggestions as to what may causing this problem? Today I had the problem this morning and I had to turn the key three times to get it to crank. Is it a switch, battery, etc?

Answer:
We would need to duplicate the problem while testing! It could be the ignition switch or the starter!

Dodge Grand Caravan needs a Starter

Car Information:
Dodge Grand Caravan
Year: 1989
Engine Size: 6L
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
The car battery is good but frequently when I go to start the car the starter clicks as if I have a dead battery, after a few and sometimes several attempts it starts up without hesitation. Seems to act up more when the car is hot from running several short errands. Had the guys at auto zone hook up their meter which said the battery, alteranator and starter were all operating within proper ranges. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Answer:
It needs a starter! It has a bad spot or high resistance spot in the armature. When it lands on it after the starter quits spinning it wont allow the solenoid to engage and start the motor. Heat will cause the problem to get worse because it increases resistance.

Starting Trouble for Suburban

Car Information:
Chevrolet Suburban
Year: 2005
Engine Size: 5.3
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Starts hard after running a while. Always starts but usually takes 2 turns of the key. Once its running it runs great.

Answer:

This could be a bad one way check valve in the fuel pump. If it sticks and does not seal it will allow fuel to return to the tank, when the vehicle isn’t running, then when you go to restart you have to crank and chase all the air out of the fuel system and re-prime before it will start. When it does this, chances are a new fuel pump will be needed to correct the problem.

Camara has intermittent starter issue

Car Information:
Chevy Camaro
Year: 1997
Engine Size: 3.8
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
This Camaro has an intermittent starting issue. Hot or cold it doesn’t matter, it will always turn over, but not always start. No codes are present, and the fuel pump does actuate during the no start situations. There are no performance issues when the car does start. Bad crank position sensor? Coil packs? Fuel pump starting to go?
Thanks, and good day!

Answer:
Try this, cycle the key to on without cranking the motor for 5 seconds then turn the key off, do this 5 to 7 times before cranking the engine. If it starts right up there’s a good chance the residual fuel in the system has bled back into the tank and cycling the key is allowing the fuel pump to re-prime the fuel system. If it starts right up it will most likely take a new fuel pump module to fix your problem.

Sentra Starter

Car Information:
Nissan Sentra
Year: 1998
Engine Size: SR20DE/1998cc
Trans: Manual

Issue / Question:
Car will not start. Prior to event, starting cycle sounded slow almost like low battery. But it is ok. Now when ignition key is turned, a arching sound is heard and it sounds like it is coming from a relay centrally mounted on the rear side of the engine near valve cover by firewall. It becomes warm to touch after 4 – 5 attempts to start. Do you think it is the starter or a or that relay assembly? Thank you

Answer:
Have you tried jump starting the car? Check the Positive terminal they usually start to fall apart on this car after a few years.

Greetings, Four days ago I came home from running some errands. I left the van parked for 3 hours. When I went to start the van again, it wouldn’t start. The battery is fully charged and I just replaced the starter motor. When I turn the key I can hear the starter engage, but it doesn’t turn the engine, not even a little bit.

Sounds like a bad starter if you here it click when you turn the key.
