Mobil vs Amsoil

Car Information:
Honda Civic
Year: 2005
Engine Size: 1.4L
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:

I use Mobil 1 full synthetic and a Fram Tough Guard filter. I drive mostly highway miles, with some city. I do not over-stress my engine, which has about 115,000 miles. I change my filter and oil every 10K miles.

Today, I was listening to your show and I want to know what advantage Amsoil has over Mobil 1 fully synthetic.

Answer:
Don’t get me wrong, if they didn’t make Amsoil I to would most likely use Mobil 1, Mobil is made from group 3 PAO base stocks. Amsoil Group 5 so Amsoil is a more durable oil. The most important aspect is Amsoil uses ESTERS in their PAO base which Mobil does not. Without Esters added to PAO oils seals degradation occurs, both oils are great at reducing or eliminating friction and wear but most Mobil engines are candidates for oil seal replacements after 100K. Because the seals get hard and allow oil to start leaking.
Good luck hope this helps

Gear Damage in Honda Civic

Car Information:
Honda Civic
Year: 2001
Engine Size: 1.7
Trans: Manual

Issue / Question:
Second gear used to pop out from time to time. Some times when it popped out I would try to keep it in but all I would hear is like a grinding noise. Now I can’t even put my car in second gear. If I try to, it will just grind. I was wondering if you would know what it may be. Thanks!

Answer:
It started as a synchronizer but now it sounds like their may be some gear damage. Let me know and we will check on a used transmission.
