US vs. Foreign Auto Repairs

Car Information:
Mercury Grand Marquis
Year: 1994
Engine Size: V8
Trans: Automatic

Issue/Question: It used to be that the repair cost for American autos were less than foreign autos. Is this still true today even though some are made in the U.S? Thanks.

Answer:
In years past, before Toyota and Honda were as big as they are today, parts from them were a little higher than a comparable American made part. But nowadays, other than the branding, the power train designs are very similar. Since so many imports are actually made here in the states, parts and labor operations are now very close to the same.

Amsoil

Car Information:
Ford F-250
Year: 2009
Engine Size: 6.4 Diesel
Trans: Automatic

Issue/Question: Love your show. A while back I heard you mention an Amsoil product that improved mileage and lubricated the fuel system and I cant remember which one it was. I think you said it’s ok to use it every other tank. (Maybe the 50:1)? Thanks for all the great advise!

Answer:
Try the 100 to 1 Amsoil synthetic out board oil use 8 ounces with a full tank of fuel.

Problems Starting Chevy Silverado

Car Information:
Chevy Silverado
Year: 1998
Engine Size: 350
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Will not start after sitting overnight, and very humid in am. Have replaced distributor cap, rotor. W/d 40 under cap has no effect, neither does starting fluid.
Runs well when running.
Don’t know if it matters but fuel gauge shimmies back and forth quickly.
Will often start fine after sitting to mid-day

Answer:
Gas gauge may be a giveaway! The sending unit and the electric fuel pump share the same ground at the connector by the fuel tank. Over time this ground becomes overheated due to excessive amps drawn by the fuel pump, intermittent fuel pump and fuel gauge fluctuations are common when this condition occurs and intermittent fuel pump operation can be expected.

Vehicle Auctions

Car Information:

Year:

Issue / Question:
Larry,
Do you still purchase vehicle at the auction for others, if so what is the cost? We are looking to spend 10k to replace our 04 GMC Envoy LE but will consider other choices.

Answer:
To be honest with you it would be a better idea for you to find one on Craigs List or the www.autotraderonline.com from a owner and have any purchase conditional on a pre purchase inspection at Magic Mechanic. Used vehicles at auction have gotten too high to take the kind of chances one must take nowadays. At least if you buy one from an individual owner you can at least drive the vehicle and have us check it over first, where we don’t have that luxury if we buy it at auction. In most cases we can buy a better vehicle for less money then we can from an auction. That’s why you don’t see many used car lots make it very long around here. If you find something you want us to take a look at give us ring 407-629-2661

BMW may have internal pressure leak

Car Information:
BMW 330i
Year: 2004
Engine Size: 3L
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Sometimes, first thing in the morning, when I put it into drive nothing happens. Reverse is OK. Then drive is OK for the remainder of the day & possibly the next 2-3 days before it happens again.

Answer:
First we need to scan the system for codes. If none found, a pressure test needs to take place in the AM during cold start when placed into drive.

If we have low pressure it means there’s an internal pressure leak, a check valve or leaky piston seal could be leaking pressure and causing the issue, unfortunately this would require internal repair.

If we have no pressure when the transmission has the delay its actually good news! This usually means there’s an electrical contact problem with the electronic range switch that electronically sends info to the computer that opens the correct solenoids when you select a gear position. (This is a common problem with this transmission).

Lincoln Navigator Computer Problems

Car Information:
Lincoln Navigator
Year: 2005
Engine Size: V8
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:

Two problems: one, park assist is only working part of the time. On dash it’s asking for a turn on or off with a reset. Is this a simple procedure to replace a sensor? Could it be one sensor only? Is this a simple owner repair? How much would you charge for a repair?
Second, the driver front seat will no longer move forward or back. I hear what sounds like a relay kicking in and out but no movement but it does move up and down. What’s the charge for this repair. Fuse is good. Thanks

Answer:
We have to date not had a 2005 Navigator in the shop with a parking brake assist problem. There is 2 common areas for an issue: one, is the switch ($47.61) the other is the control module ($329.02) of course we will also need to check and make sure there is no blown fuses or power supply problems first.

The driver seat problem may not really be a problem! This is a common issue on FORD seat track assemblies in most cases the problem is caused by loose change falling out of a pocket and land on the track and when the seat gets moved it locks up the track. If you don’t burn the motor up trying to move the seat we can usually remove the seat remove a coin and reuse the existing parts! Usually a 2.0 job if correct about $169.00

Blown Fuse in Ford F150

Car Information:
Ford F150 HD Pickup
Year: 2002
Engine Size: 5.4
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
5 amp fuse on interior fuse panel (#15?) blows immediately. Short to ground can’t be found. I think fuse is for RABS, GEM Module? Inop items are interior lights, seat belt reminder, wipers, horn, electric windows, and will not shift out of park after engine started. Any idea where to look? Have checked wiring on frame, engine compartment, firewall plug connection, isolated brake light on/off switch, Transmission Range switch, drivers door panel electric window rocker switches, wiring on lower door sill under carpet checked. Have seen this problem before?

Answer:
Maybe a door latch switch! Seen the switch go bad and cause it to short out and blow fuse when you shut the (most likely the drivers door).
Try a 10 amp fuse if history repeats itself I would pull the door panel and look at the drivers door latch switch.

Ford Taurus Stalling Problem

Car Information:
Ford Taurus
Year: 2003
Engine Size: 3.0 l duratec
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
My “Check Engine” light came on last weekend. Now it stalls when idleing in drive and runs roughly or stalls when in park or neutral. When I purchased this car, it has 42,000 miles. Now, it has 65,000 miles. I put Lucas fuel injector cleaner in, but this does not appear to be working.

Answer:
It appears that you have a vacuum leak under the intake plenum. This is a very common problem with this vehicle, but can be difficult to get to. It would be best to have a mechanic look at it.

Pre Purchase Inspection

Car Information:
Jeep Cherokee
Year:1998
Engine Size: 4.0
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:

I’ve been a customer for an number of years and value your opinion. JD advised me that my 98′ Jeep was on it’s last leg. 5th cylinder, other stuff. I need to purchase a similar size vehicle and would like advice on new & used, that will be dependable and hopefully last as long as the Jeep did. I’ll be using it for business and personal; cargo space for samples and 2 Irish Setters. Something in the Toyota 4Runner or Ford Escape category, basic low end with 4.0 engine ?? If I go with the used route, what would your fee be for checking it out before I buy ??

Answer:
We charge $84.50 for a pre purchase inspection. There’s a lot of good mid size SUVs’ on the market. If we switch them over to Amsoil, I believe one will last just about as long as another. If you have any questions while looking just give us a call 407-629-2661
