BMW may have internal pressure leak

Car Information:
BMW 330i
Year: 2004
Engine Size: 3L
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Sometimes, first thing in the morning, when I put it into drive nothing happens. Reverse is OK. Then drive is OK for the remainder of the day & possibly the next 2-3 days before it happens again.

Answer:
First we need to scan the system for codes. If none found, a pressure test needs to take place in the AM during cold start when placed into drive.

If we have low pressure it means there’s an internal pressure leak, a check valve or leaky piston seal could be leaking pressure and causing the issue, unfortunately this would require internal repair.

If we have no pressure when the transmission has the delay its actually good news! This usually means there’s an electrical contact problem with the electronic range switch that electronically sends info to the computer that opens the correct solenoids when you select a gear position. (This is a common problem with this transmission).

Vehicle Speed Sensor in Ford Windstar

Car Information:
Ford Windstar
Year: 2002
Engine Size:
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
We have Ford Van Windstar, 2002 and is showing the following problem:

Overdrive light is blinking
Brake light is on all the time
It is not showing speeding and the mileage is in blank.

Can you help us with this? Tell what’s happening? Please.

Thanks.

Answer:
All these problems have one thing in common! The vehicle speed sensor! We would start by scanning your computer and see if it is receiving a signal for the sensor. If not, we would check the sensor it self. If it has no output signal we would replace it and clear all the trouble codes then test drive to double check and make sure the problem is resolved.

Dodge Ram Van Maintenance questions

Car Information:
Dodge Ram Van 1500
Year: 2003
Engine Size: 5.7
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
I have 3 questions:

1) Today my ignition switch was stuck off, and I had to fiddle and fiddle with it to get it to turn on. It has tilt wheel, and this is the 2nd switch in 90,000. And I have a very lightweight ring of keys since the first time I had it fixed. Is there a graphite or something to lubricate the switch?

2) Last week I bought Amzoil 100:1 treatment in quart bottle, how much should I use? I have a 30 gallon tank.

3) When I was in last Tuesday, I came in to buy a maintenance free Interstate battery…the first battery installed was not maintenance free, so they had to go get one, and it was taking up my morning, and the one they got was a NAPA. Is this battery as good as an Interstate?

Answer:
The only maintenance free battery Interstate makes is the Optima Gel batteries they usually run $250.00 to $350.00 each. Interstate states 90% of early failures of their maintenance free acid batteries were due to low water or acid so they quit making them.

1 ounce to each 5 gallon gasoline with the Amsoil Outboard 100 to 1 two stroke oil

Do not spray anything into the key switch it will cause a problem with pass key reader and the computer system will not be able to read the key resistance.

Maintenance needed on Ford E-150

Car Information:
Ford E-150
Year: 2003
Engine Size: 4.2
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
At 90+ mph acts like its missing, now happens as low as 35 mph. Will go a week around town and is o.k. On the highway will go 200+ miles with no problem. I travel often and am currently in west Texas. The van has 78,000 miles. Odessa ford can not help me, no warning lights or no code set. May not be available to stream live, going to New Mexico, e- mail if possible. Purchased new highly maintained, and yes amsoil. Problem started approx. 3200. miles ago, PLEASE HELP!

Answer:

You do know I’m at a disadvantage considering I’m sitting behind my desk in Orlando and you have the van in Texas? If it feels like a misfire it most likely is. If it was mine I would replace the plugs and ignition cables and install a new fuel filter and air filter if needed. Another thing that happens is the secondary intake valves that open to allow more air under wide open throttle sometimes stick or the vacuum valves quit working this also needs to be looked at.

Power Steering Pump leaking fluid

Car Information:
Mitsubishi Montero
Year: 2000
Engine Size: 6 cylinder
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Had to remove power steering pump when replacing valve cover gaskets on my daughter-in-law’s Mitsubishi. Now power steering fluid is bubbling out of reservoir. Followed proper bleeding instructions, but doesn’t seem to help one bit. Daughter-in-law says power steering pump was making noise before we ever removed it, but it wasn’t bubbling like this. Don’t think pump is bad, because it is making all this bubbling. No apparent leaks in the lines that we can see. My son & I need help before his wife loses patience. Valve covers nice and dry though.

Answer:

Sounds like there’s air in it. Sometimes removing the belt and by hand rotating the pump pulley backwards sometimes helps remove the air.

2007 Nissan Pathfinder General Issues

Car Information:
Nissan Pathfinder
Year: 2007
Engine Size: 4.3 l
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
I have a minor engine vibration that I can feel in the steering wheel that developed a couple of months ago. I have 84,000 miles on it and was wondering if it’s time to change the plugs. I’m also curious as to if I should follow the manufacturer recommendation to change the transmission fluid/filter, differential lubrication, and flush/change the coolent and brake fluid. I change the oil every 5,000 miles with Castrol Full Syntex. Is there anything else I should consider to keep my car in good shape?

Answer:
Anytime between now and 100,000 miles is fine for the spark plug. As for the recommended services, they are no joke. Having them done will most likely save you thousands of dollars in repair costs over the vehicles’ life.

GM Class A Allegro Motor

Car Information:
GM
Year: 1991
Engine Size: 460
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
This is a class A Allegro motor that has 134a a/c system in it. It has not be used in years and is very low on freon. I want to change the dryer, vacuum it down and check for leaks. After all this, what else do I have to prior to using ice32? Thank you

Answer:
Hey you don’t want to go back with 134, we got the alternative R-12 refrigerant called FR-12 and it works a lot better then 134, then we could install the ICE.

Lexus vs Mercedes; Maintenace cost wise

Car Information:
Lexus/ Mercedes
Year:
Engine Size:
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Opinion. I am debating on getting a 2010 Lexus RX 350 or Mercedes GLK 350. I listen and know you are fond of Lexus but I like your opinion; especially on Maintenance.

Answer:
Both are good vehicles. Maintenance cost will be about the same if we do them, 50% more for the Lexus if the dealer does them, and double for the Benz if the dealer does the services.

Saturn Dealer closed, new warranty work

Car Information:
Saturn Vue XR
Year: 2008
Engine Size: 3.6L
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Dear Larry,
I am an avid fan of your radio show and have used your web site to ask many questions. With that said here is my problem. I own two Saturns; 2001 SC2, and a 2008 Vue XR. I have been a Saturn fan for years beginning with my 1991 SL2, which I drove for ten great years. As you are well aware, the Saturn brand was eliminated by GM and to my surprise both Saturn of Orlando North and South (my store) went out of business last month. The Saturn web site shows Starling Chevrolet as assuming the remaining warranty work for Saturns, but I do not know them. So here are the questions: 1) Could you do the remaining warranty work on my 2008 Vue? 2) I live way down in Poinciana, what if I have to leave my car over night? 3) I also have an extended warranty on my Vue, do you work with them also? 4) If I bring my car in for service work, could we schedule early, in the AM, so I do not have to leave the car? 5)I have a specific problem with my Vue. A squeaking in the steering wheel. Saturn had me set up to replace the steering rake, but my dealer closed down before I could get the work done. Would you have access to my electronic service records? And could you perform the rake replacement under warranty?

Answer:
I can do all the maintenance, and repairs, even honor the extended warranty. But we would have to check and see if they will pay us to do factory warranty, GM used to in some case’s because were a A-C Delco TSS shop but since their Government Motors now that has changed and most likely you will have to take it to another Government motors dealer.
