Torque Converter

Car Information:
Ford
Year: 2004
Engine Size: 5.2
Trans: Automatic

Issue/Question: I have the torque converter shutter and brought it by your shop and we put the super oil in it. It seemed to lesson the shutter especially at the 40MPH range but it still shutters. If I accelerate through or back off the gas it stops. My question is what other dammage is occurring due to this problem? I have your estimate of about $900 so if I can’t do this for a few weeks, am I causing futher damge to other parts??

Answer:
Not if we already added it, sounds like your going to be getting a torque converter sooner then later! It shouldn’t hurt anything unless it loses the friction material on the torque converter clutch, if it does it will try to neutral out then drop back into 4th then the OD light will start flashing. Do you have the problem when you cancel the overdrive? Stop by and we will install a bottle of lube guard with a friction enhancer in it and see if that helps.

Strong Gas Smell

Car Information:
Ford
Year: 2003
Engine Size: 7.3L
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
I purchased this truck about 2 years ago. Excellent condition and great truck. Lately I have noticed that you can smell a stronger diesel smell than before. I can even smell the diesel odor coming through vent when you turn ignition on while waiting for the warmer light to go off before starting. This truck is not driven every day and sometimes for weeks. Any ideas or should this be considered normal.

Answer:
I suspect either you may have developed an exhaust leak in the engine compartment or the recirculate door for the A/C isn’t working.

Ford EGR Valve Questions

Car Information:
Ford
Year: 2000
Engine Size: 3.0 DOHC
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
I am getting Code 401, so I replaced the EGR valve. It still ran a little rough, but there was no “check engine” light until yesterday. I punched it pretty hard, automatic downshifted, and the light came on. Code 401. What do you suggest?

Answer:
There may be a lot of carbon in the EGR port and getting stuck in the valve causing voltage issues with the position sensor.

Missed Transmission service causing problems

Car Information:
Ford Super Crew
Year: 2004
Engine Size: 5.4L
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
I missed a transmission service @ 90k miles and started experiencing chugging between gears at 1500 rpm at 45 mph. At about 125k miles I got the super duper transmission service and the chugging is still there. Is there a way to tell if I need a new transmission or could it be something else? Please let me know.
Thanks

Answer:
What your describing is the transmission is going into 4th gear or torque converter lock up at too low of an RPM causing a chugging sensation! Alright if this is the case 4R70-W transmission I would scan the computer system first to make sure the vehicle speed sensor, the data being sent to the computer is correct, and if there are no codes I would be inclined to reprogram your computer if necessary, shift later by 5 to 7 miles an hour. I can check there might be an update on this if not we can program a different tire size to change the shift pattern, bottom line is if its a shift timing problem we should be able to save the transmission however if its slipping already it may be to late to save it, a test drive will let us know what to do. Let us know if we can help.

Update:
Owner: I bought larger tires at about 90k miles. I was told they are 2” larger diameter than the stock tires. I don’t know that I would say its slipping because when I accelerate and go through the gears at over 2000 rpm there is no chugging. Please let me know how long you think it would take it would take to evaluate the computer/sensor and adjust if that is what it needs and I will schedule accordingly.

Larry: 2 inches taller of a tire is like going from a 3.75 gear ratio to around a 3.50 gear ratio this can make a huge difference especially if the computer has not been re calibrated for the tire size difference, our NGS system can reprogram your computer to make adjustments based on your current tire size, I suggest doing this before anything else, give us a call and my guys will let you know the best time to bring it in<.

Maintenance needed on Ford E-150

Car Information:
Ford E-150
Year: 2003
Engine Size: 4.2
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
At 90+ mph acts like its missing, now happens as low as 35 mph. Will go a week around town and is o.k. On the highway will go 200+ miles with no problem. I travel often and am currently in west Texas. The van has 78,000 miles. Odessa ford can not help me, no warning lights or no code set. May not be available to stream live, going to New Mexico, e- mail if possible. Purchased new highly maintained, and yes amsoil. Problem started approx. 3200. miles ago, PLEASE HELP!

Answer:

You do know I’m at a disadvantage considering I’m sitting behind my desk in Orlando and you have the van in Texas? If it feels like a misfire it most likely is. If it was mine I would replace the plugs and ignition cables and install a new fuel filter and air filter if needed. Another thing that happens is the secondary intake valves that open to allow more air under wide open throttle sometimes stick or the vacuum valves quit working this also needs to be looked at.

Bad Transmission on Ford

Car Information:
Ford Freestyle
Year: 2006
Engine Size: 6 cylinder
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
My check engine light and wrench light stayed on after starting the car. But if the car was turned off and restarted they went away. I drove the car that way for a month. Then the car did not move in drive, but when warmed up I was able to move it out of the drive. I took the car in and was told the transmission was shot and needed a new one. I spent $5600.00 for a transmission. Brought the car home and the next day the lights were back on. Now I question if I ever received a new transmission. I was forced to pay cash as he would not accept personal checks and he charged 2% more for credit cards. I took the car back and he said he took it to the Ford dealer and he forgot to change a sensor or something after replacing the transmission. Brought it home and again the lights are on. He said he took it back to Ford and there is nothing wrong. He said the lights were off. So went to pick it up after work. Lights are on. This has been going on for over three weeks. I don’t want to drive my car with lights on and I think he should have to fix my car. Because to me these lights were part of the problem and $5600 hundred dollars later. I feel I have the same issue. This shop was recommended by someone who had there transmission fixed there. Please help. I don’t know what to do.

Answer:

I’m sorry to hear this but unfortunately I hear it everyday! You are right you might have not needed a transmission. And if you did you paid almost twice as much as what we could have done the job for! I suggest if you don’t have any luck you tell this Thief your dealing with your taking the car to Magic Mechanic in Orlando to see exactly what has been done to your car and what is still needed and to retain me Larry Perry as an expert for any potential litigation concerning this repair! And yes you have my permission to use my name concerning this matter.

I also think I will read this e-mail during the open of my radio show Saturday so other consumers can see just how easy it is to be taken by a transmission shop!

Ford Engine

Car Information:
Ford
Year: 2000
Engine Size: 5.4L
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
CODE P175. FOUND NO COMPRESSION NBR1 CYL. ENGINE HAS MISS AND NOISE. Removed valve cover found rocker on nbr 1 had come off. reinstalled and ran engine- came off again. noticed valve stayed stuck down and would ‘pop’ up abruptly. Can head be removed with engine installed or must the engine be removed as Ford says?

Answer:
I think it could be done but you must understand it requires removing the oil pan, timing cover, timing chain’s, Tensioner’s, and guides to pull the head. Next upon reassemble you would have to already have the head bolts in the head tied up to clear the fire wall. Honestly it would be a lot easier to remove the motor.

Engine Vibrates

Car Information:
Ford
Year: 1998
Engine Size: 5.4L
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
1. Engine vibrates like misfire on plugs. I replaced plugs and still same problem. Check engine light gives code of “E” as trouble code.
2. I also have a lot of sqeaking when truck bounces/rocks in front end of truck.

Answer:
It may have a vacuum leak causing the misfire and sounds like it needs to have the front shocks checked.

Oil Change and Air Pressure

Car Information:
Ford Fusion Hybrid
Year: 2010
Engine Size: 4 cyl.
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
When can I put Amsoil in this car. I only have 1450 miles on it.
Also what do you think of putting nitrogin in the tires?
Thanks for you advice.

Answer:
3000 miles is ok for break in, then 0-W-30 Amsoil change it every 10,000 mile. Nitrogen is dehumidified air. Nitrogen is already 92% pure air. Studies have shown Nitrogen filled automotive tires has not shown to improve fuel economy unless you were to figure the improvement in the 100 thousands of a percent which wont work in a + or – 1% to many factors to prove a theory.
