Changing oil every 3,000 miles

Car Information:
Ford Focus
Year: 2006
Engine Size: 2.0
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
I listen to your show as often as I can, normally when I am traveling and I enjoy it very much. I know you are a proponent of Amsoil . While I don’t disagree, due to cost and my situation I opt for changing my oil every 3,000 miles. Through the years it has worked well for me and my vehicles. The last couple of years you have said that the automobile manufactures specs calling for SAE 5-20 weight was just a ploy to require more service $ on your vehicle. While my automobiles were under warranty I always follow the manufactures specs religiously but after that I try to use my experiences, common sense and do listen to others for advise. Anyhow my question to you is what SAE weight oil do you recommend to someone who does replace their oil every 3,000 miles? As I have been a Pennzoil customer for 50 years, would you agree that SAE 10 W 30 would be a better choice for my 2006 Dodge Caravan & Ford Focus?

Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me

Answer:
We use the Amsoil 0-W-30 and change it every 10,000 mile. With a petroleum oil the closest you can come would be a 5-W-30 we don’t use 5-W-15 or 5-W-20 in anything here in Central Florida.

Airbag light lights up

Car Information:
Ford Focus
Year: 2007
Engine Size:
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Ford’s warranty specifies 5 years, 50k miles for the restraint systems; IE belts and airbags. If the airbag light in a 2007 Focus is lit periodically, is there anything it could indicate other than a problem with the airbag system? The local Ford dealer says “not covered” but that it can be fixed for $1000.

Answer:
I would suspect a bad multi-function switch or steering wheel contact plate. However we would need to scan it but I don’t see it
costing $1000.00 to fix unless the vehicle has been wrecked and had a air bag deploy.

Brake Pads

Car Information:
Ford Focus
Year: 2007
Engine Size:
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
If brakes squeak on wet days but not dry ones, is that normal, or a warning sign?

Answer:
Your car came with Semi Metallic brake pads that’s why if you don’t wash your car often the front wheels will start to turn black because of metal dust. These metallic pads cause etching to take place on the rotors and when exposed to vast amounts of humidity or rain they rust and will cause squeaks and squeals until the rust is removed by the brake pads. Believe it or not this is considered normal by the manufacture? If you are like myself don’t believe this should be standard equipment on any vehicle, have Ceramic brake pads installed during your next brake job. They cost a little more but worth the money.
