Bad Vacuum Valve

Car Information:
Ford Escape
Year: 2001
Engine Size: 3.0
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Love your show. Listen every Saturday When I can. I have an AC problem. When idling, air blows cold but when driving air is no longer cold but is like outside temp. I put in 2 cans of freon several weeks ago. On one of your shows I heard you mention a one way valve. Could this be the problem I’m having? Thank you for all the excellent advice. I refer people to your site any time they need advice.

Answer:
When you accelerate from a stop, check and see if the air volume from the vents change to the defrost! If it does, sounds like the one way vacuum valve is bad!

Low Battery

Car Information:
Ford Escape
Year: 2001
Engine Size: 6 cylinder
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
On Friday morning my battery was dead ( it is1 yr old) I found no apparent reason for the low battery. After I recharged it and started the escape, I found that the radio, interior lights and the door locks wouldn’t work. When I leave the key on, the doors will lock, when the ignition is off, the electric locks are dead. Also when I start up all of the gauges will go to max for about 3 seconds then go back to normal. other than the above problems it runs normally. Thank you

Answer:
There is a module called a GEM Module on this vehicle that controls functions like interior lighting, door locks, and radio. most likely the module isn’t shutting off and running the battery dead! We would check for a battery draw the way it is and then check for a draw with the GEM Module disconnected if the draw goes away we would replace the GEM module.

Exhaust Leak

Car Information:
Ford Escape
Year: 2008
Engine Size:
Trans: Manual

Issue / Question:
You have changed the oil on this vehicle twice w/Amsoil. I am hearing what sounds like valve clatter for a while when I first start driving. It has only 16,000. Should this be something covered in Ford Dealer Warranty?

Answer:
It may be an exhaust leak. I have another customer with the same vehicle, had an exhaust leak only when cold. After the engine got to normal temp the exhaust manifold expanded a little and the leak/noise went away.
