Dodge Grand Caravan needs a Starter

Car Information:
Dodge Grand Caravan
Year: 1989
Engine Size: 6L
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
The car battery is good but frequently when I go to start the car the starter clicks as if I have a dead battery, after a few and sometimes several attempts it starts up without hesitation. Seems to act up more when the car is hot from running several short errands. Had the guys at auto zone hook up their meter which said the battery, alteranator and starter were all operating within proper ranges. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Answer:
It needs a starter! It has a bad spot or high resistance spot in the armature. When it lands on it after the starter quits spinning it wont allow the solenoid to engage and start the motor. Heat will cause the problem to get worse because it increases resistance.

Dodge Grand Caravan stalls for no reason

Car Information:
Dodge Grand Caravan
Year: 1997
Engine Size: 3.3
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
The van will just die. If you are going above 40 mph it will start back but if slower you have to put it in neutral and start it. It usually starts up but sometimes dies a couple of times more, especially if you are at a light when it dies. Sometimes it doesn’t die for a long time (couple of hours). There were no computer read outs when I had it scanned awhile back. I have wired the pump direct at the tank. I have wired a volt meter to that point & the 12v seems to goes away right at the same time as engine dies. What should the idle speed be set at and I thought I would check the fuel pressure, what should the fuel pressure be? Van has 140000 miles on it and has been tuned up. What next? I don’t know.

Answer:
Sounds like a bad fuel pump or ignition switch. Fuel pressure test and a voltage supply test would show the problem if this condition could be duplicated. Considering the age of the van I might be tempted to replace both as maintenance items.

Caravan shuts down spontaneously

Car Information:
Dodge Caravan
Year: 1997
Engine Size:
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
The engine shuts down spontaneously while driving. Goes for months without it happening then it will happen 3 times in the same day. I can throw it into neutral and it restarts immediately, but have had some scary moments like turning left on a busy highway and it shuts down. I’m pretty quick about getting it started again, but still scary.

Answer:
We would replace the ASD and Fuel pump relays one or the other is most likely causing the problem. Let us know if you need our help

Dodge Caravan Transmission

Car Information:
Dodge Caravan
Year: 2001
Engine Size: 3.3L V-6
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Transmission not shifting into higher gear rpms at 3500 at speeds of 50 or 55. Checked trans oi,l no metal and no discoloration lost on this one. If I change trans filter could that make a difference?

Answer:
Its most likely in limp mode! We will need to scan the system to see what’s going on before we can even speculate. Speed sensor, Range switch, Solenoid pack, Electronic pressure switch, all can cause this condition. After we scan it we can give you a good idea of which direction we need to go,

Metal in the Fluid

Car Information:
Dodge/Caravan
Year: 1999
Engine Size: 3.0
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
I took it in for a transmission fluid change and the dealer said that the fluid had metal in the pan so the fluid was bad. He also said that if he changed the fluid the transmission would stop working and that I needed to spend $400.00 for him to open it and see what parts it needed. The transmission is working fine and has about 135,000 miles on it. Can I change the filter and fluid on this transmission?

Answer:
Get it out of there now. I don’t care if you have to tow it out! Some metal in the pan is normal wear from the thrust washers. Just install a new filter and pan gasket and install new fluid. It really sounds like they’re trying to rip you off!
