Fuel Pump

Car Information:
Chevrolet Suburban
Year: 1999
Engine Size: 5.7
Trans: Automatic

Issue/Question: Larry, we used to hear the fuel pump cycle when we turned off the engine. We don’t hear that now and it is difficult to start. But once it starts it runs normally. The pump is a year old and the fuel pump relay is new.

Answer:
Try turing the key on and off about 6 times, then try to start the truck. If it starts right up, there could be a problem in the CPI fuel system allowing fuel to leak out while sitting. We would recommend a residual fuel pressure test to verify if this is the case.

Starting Trouble for Suburban

Car Information:
Chevrolet Suburban
Year: 2005
Engine Size: 5.3
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Starts hard after running a while. Always starts but usually takes 2 turns of the key. Once its running it runs great.

Answer:

This could be a bad one way check valve in the fuel pump. If it sticks and does not seal it will allow fuel to return to the tank, when the vehicle isn’t running, then when you go to restart you have to crank and chase all the air out of the fuel system and re-prime before it will start. When it does this, chances are a new fuel pump will be needed to correct the problem.

Broken AC Belt

Car Information:
Chevy/Suburban
Year: 2001
Engine Size: 5.3
Trans: manual

Issue / Question:
My a/c belt broke. We replaced it with a belt from an autopart store with no problem. We test drove the vehicle and discovered a aweful noise which was the tensioner vibrating violently. We then replaced it 2 times; one time with an aftermarket one and it also vibrated violently. We then bought a gm tensioner and the problem continued. We have been told the compressor is going bad. It still blows cold air. Thank you for the help!

Answer:
If you don’t have the problem with the A/C off it may very well be that the compressor is requiring excessive torque to turn causing the problem, this would mean the compressor is seizing internally and will need replacement.
