Trans: Automatic

Issue/Question:
The bottom of my A/C compressor has a fine chalky film of a greenish yellow color that could be a leak, however it’s dry. About 3 years ago you put in ICE 32. My air is running great. Do I have have a pending problem? How much does a new compressor cost?

Answer:
It sounds like it may have started leaking then stopped! If needed bring it by and we will check the refrigerant level.

Buick Century Instrument Panel Problems

Car Information:
Buick Century
Year: 2002
Engine Size: 6 cyl
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Odometer and which gear one is in indicators inside instrument panel no longer light up and are therefore unreadable. Dealer told me entire instrument panel has to be replaced to fix the problem which will cost 800 dollars. Heard your radio program Saturday where you said Buick was well aware of the shortcomings of it’s instrument panels and where you also said the prices of these panels was coming down and now around 300 dollars. Is that a fair estimate of what you would charge me to fix it? Thank you.

Answer:
Here’s the deal on this car, the cluster is available from the dealer (big bucks), used or we can send yours out for rebuild, then after we get it installed we will have to program it. We can get it done for $515.00 parts and labor.

1993 Buick Century Transmission Issue

Car Information:
Buick Century
Year: 1993
Engine Size: Not Sure
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
Transmission is not moving this vehicle. The car was running smoothly when parked at a store, and then on restart would not move. Now it isn’t moving in any forward or reverse gears. A linkage cable does move the connection on the transmission housing but does not shift into gear. This car only has 73,000 miles on it and has been very well cared for.

Answer:
When this happens, it is usally internal; a reaction shell of sun gear usually breaks into and requires removal of the transmission and dissembled to repair.

1999 Buick Centry Engine Problem

Car Information:
Buick Centry
Year: 1999
Engine Size: Not Sure
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
For the past 2-3 months, my car seems to be bucking when I try to quickly accelerate from 1st gear to 2nd gear, and from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. A trip from Lake Wales to Deltona normally took 1 1/2-2 hours, and now it takes over 4 hours in a hard rain. I originally thought that this may be caused by the water from the roadway, but for the past week, the same thing has been happening when it’s been sitting for a while and I try to accelerate quickly. I put a version of STP and mid-level octance and tried driving quickly on I-4, but the problem continues. I’ve checked the transmission fluid level and it seems to be okay. My daughter has suggested a transmission fluid exchange, and someone else suggested changing the O2 sensor. I’ve had this car for just over two years and the check engine light has been on for practically the entire time. Would a transmission fluid exchange be the right thing? And how much should it normally cost? Thank you!

Answer:
This sounds like an engine tune problem. Either it has plug wires breaking down, or it could be a plugged fuel filter. What we can do is scan the computer system to find out why the check engine light is on and correct that problem first. Then, we can check the ignition system and see if the engine is due for a major tune up, and next perform a fuel pressure and volume test to see if it is low or has low volume.

Low Fuel Pressure on Buick?

Car Information:
Buick Century
Year: 1998
Engine Size: 3.1
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
The car is hard to start, if I push on the gas pedal it will start, when it is running it will pulse and almost quit, if I sit still with it in park it will stop running.

Answer:
It sounds like it may be low on fuel pressure. Have a fuel pressure test performed first if it looks ok have it scanned and look at the throttle position sensor data and see if it has a smooth transition without any drop offs on the voltage scale.
