Tires Locking Up

Car Information:
Nissan Altima GXE
Year: 1995
Engine Size: V6
Trans: Automatic

Issue/Question: The main problem is that the caliper locks up even after depressing the brake pedal. This was on the passenger side front tire. It continued even after bleeding the brake lines, master cylinder, and new pads. The cylinder had a bad proportion valve, which was fixed, but is still having a problem. Thanks.

Answer:
If it’s only one side locking up I would suspect a bad brake hose. They swell up internally and won’t allow the fluid to return to the master cylinder.

ABS Module

Car Information:
Toyota Sienna
Year: 2003
Engine Size: 3.0L V6
Trans: Automatic

Issue/Question: Brake, ABS, and Tire Pressure lights are on. Initial diagnostic test stated LF wheel speed sensor had to be replaced. Lights never shut off. I took it to Courtesy Toyota who also diagnosed the van and later stated that the ABS Actuator/Computer had to be replaced. The cost is $2,000. Is there another alternative other than spending that much money? Can I still drive the van? Thanks for your help.

Answer:
Greg we need to scan the system our self. Personally I don’t think we have ever replace a ABS module on one of these so they don’t go bad often. If it is defective and needs replaced due to the cost and excellent track record of this part I would suggest we install a used one and the repair (if needed) would be a fraction of the price!

Vibration

Car Information:
Ford F-150
Year: 2005

Issue/Question:
Installed new brake pads, new calipers and new front disk. Also wheel alignment done after break jobs. It has a bad vibration at the front end, sometimes it disappears but it comes back after a short drive around the block ( Also, all four quality new tires).

Answer:
Next time your in Orlando stop by and let me drive it, It may be a worn tail shaft bushing in the transmission causing excessive play in the drive shaft and causing the vibration, this is very common on 2004 and newer F-150’s

Plymouth Voyager Brakes and Steering/Struts

Car Information:
Plymouth Voyager
Year: 2002
Engine Size: 3.5
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
There’s a rattle in the front end. Sounds like a loose shock or brake pad. Could it be McPherson struts? The C.V. joints don’t grind when you turn. Van has a little over 130000 miles.

Answer:
There’s a real good chance the strut mounts are bad and insulators in the mounts are metal to metal making the noise. Normally the struts alone can not make a noise like this unless they’re locked up and broke the mounts.

Replacing the front struts mounts parts and labor costs $394.46.

You should install new front loaded struts! (It comes with strut, strut mount, new coil spring and all mounting hardware) All parts and labor costs $804.34.

Most likely the mounts alone will fix the noise. If you need struts as well, the loaded ones basically replaces the entire suspension and since it even comes with springs it reestablishes ride height as well and a very good value.

Dodge Charger Brakes/Ceramics

Car Information:
Dodge Charger
Year: 2006
Engine Size: 5.7 Hemi
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
There’s a brake squeal. The car has 27 thousand miles, I’m the 2nd owner. The brakes seemed weak and pulsating so we had the front rotors/pads/fluid replaced. There were ceramic pads installed. There is also better pedals and it’s smooth now. The first set of ceramic pads squealed on initial app, then the final stop. The shop tried a different brand and now they squeal under normal braking for the entire stop. What brand/type of ceramic pads work best on the Dodge Charger Hemi-daytona?

Answer:
Try the Adaptive One Hybrid Napa ceramics.

1997 Ford F250 HD Brake Problem

Car Information:
Ford F250 HD
Year: 1997
Engine Size: 7.3 diesel
Trans: Manual

Issue / Question:
Six months ago, I replaced the brakes in my vehicle. However, the other day I stepped on the brakes and the pedal is very resistant. My question is, did the power booster go out? Is there some way of checking it?

Answer:
If the power steering still works, the hydro boost system may have failed. When an accumulator goes bad on these, it will cause this problem.

Chevy’s Right Rear Brake Locks Up

Car Information:
Chevy/S-10
Year: 1997
Engine Size: 4.3
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
My car’s right rear brake locks up occasionally. The issue is not noticeable on dry pavement. However on dirt, grass, or wet pavement, the right rear brake will skid with just normal application of the brake, but not all of the time. My car stops very well, but it just feels like the right rear brake is grabbing ahead of the other 3.

Answer:
Sounds like a piston is sticking in a wheel cylinder or a rear brake shoe may be on backwards, with the primary and secondary shoes reversed.

Rear driver side wheel drags

Car Information:
Chevy Malibu
Year: 2003
Engine Size:
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
All of a sudden put the car in reverse and rear driver side wheel drags, then restart the car the wheel works fine. I am afraid to drive.

Answer:
If the e-brake wasn’t set I would have the wheel removed and check the brake pads, if they look good I would suggest back the car in reverse while looking at the ABS data and see if a solenoid was sticking or the ABS module is receiving false information from a vehicle speed sensor.
