BMW overheating

Car Information:
BMW 318i
Year: 1997
Engine Size:
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
What’s the estimate to replace the head gasket? The car was overheating. I changed the thermostat and the radiator. It is still overheating. The water pump is good. I’m assuming it is the head gasket.

Answer:
With the head gasket set, Machine work (valve job, resurface, pressure test, check for cracks) oils, coolant filters, minor engine tune, it could exceed $2500.00. To be 100% honest no one would know worse case scenario until the cylinder head would be removed.

Note many BMW water pumps come with plastic impellers we have seen where they will start slipping on the water pump shaft and wont pump any coolant, this needs to be checked. A C/O block test needs to be performed, and a flow test before it can be determined exactly what you have going on. It may be in your best interest to have us check it before you just have the head removed.

Water Pump

Car Information:
BMW 318i
Year: 1997
Engine Size: 1.9
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
The car overheated, I changed the thermostat ,water pump and the radiator as well. Guess what? it still overheats. (the fan is working fine.) What do you think causes the overheating?
Thanks in advance.

Answer:
We need to do a block test to see if compression gases are entering the cooling system through the head gasket or cylinder head.
If compression gases are entering the cooling system an air pocket will form and get trapped at the water pump and the water pump cannot pump air so the engine just keeps getting hotter. Let us know if you need our help 407-629-2661

Water Pump Problem

Car Information:
BMW/318i
Year: 1997
Engine Size:
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
The car overheated. I changed the thermostat and is still overheating. I realized as well that the fan does not automatically turn on. Do you think the water pump is the problem? I can drive the car right now and can drop it off at your shop unless you guys provide a tow service.

Answer:
Some of the BMW water pumps use a plastic water pump impeller that sometimes brake off and wont pump any coolant. Driving it in this condition can kill the motor.
