Car Information:
Volvo/S80 T6
Year: 1999
Engine Size: 6
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
My Volvo has 100K miles. The transmission will not shift out of 2nd gear or sometimes 3rd gear. A shop has diagnosed the problem as bad solenoids in the trans and believes they need replacement. Is this a band aid to what could lead to a complete rebuild or replacement of this transmission?

Answer:
Solenoid failure is possible but rare on this transmission. I would expect or would test 2-3 servo not applying the band. If it’s a solenoid failure, that is not an indication of expected unit failure. Its past service history will determine the life of the unit. Of course, if the transmission used Amsoil ATF, internal failure is very rare.
