Car Information:
Mercury Mountaineer
Year: 2004
Engine Size: 4.6
Trans: Automatic

Issue / Question:
When driving at highway speeds (above 40 mph), the AC works great. However, around town it hardly works at all. I took it to an AC shop; they checked the coolant and found it to be ok. He suggested the fan clutch, which was checked and replaced, but didn’t fix the problem. Are there other components that need servicing such as the sensor behind the condenser that senses airflow, or filters, etc. The compressor turns when the car is standing still. I’m not sure where to go from here.

Answer:
It sounds like a bad or weak compressor clutch coil. When the vehicle is at idle, it charges less voltage and when you accelerate, the extra volts are enough to overcome any wear on the clutch, pulley, or coil until it engages. It may just need a new clutch, coil, and pulley asm.
